"Out of Time" is the second book in the three-book series. Although it can standalone, I would strongly recommend reading the first book, "Out of Line" because you are missing out "how" the hero and heroine got together. The first book is a fast and easy read, that is as enjoyable as the second book.
The book opens with Carrie Wallington, daughter of a senator falling in love with the bodyguard that her father assigned to protect her, Finn Coram. Carrie is a typical college girl that is tired of being under her father's thumb and even though she's in love, they must keep their relationship a secret from her father and basically the world. Carrie is from a well-to-do family and Finn's father works for Carrie's father's security team. Finn, also a marine decides that the best way to have Carrie's father accept him and to feel worthy of Carrie, is to go on a special marine mission. (I picture him as a tattooed Channing Tatum.)
Although the lead up to when Finn leaves is a little slow, their relationship grows and you can really sympathizes and feel for the characters. I predicted the ending a few chapters into the read, but it is a heart-wrenching, edge of your seat read (I won't give out the details - read it yourself!)
The relationship is steamy and while Carrie is the daughter of the senator, she is not one of those stuffy heroines. She's daring and adventures, and really a nice person with a big heart. Finn is not defined by his rougher background, but he believes that he's not good enough for Carrie. He is one of those tough, sexy marines that has a secret soft spot that he shares only with his woman. The characters are multi-dimensional and feel very real.
I love the gritty writing style that transfer over from Alberts/McLaughlin's adult to new adult genre writing. As a writer, I study her writing because it is very appealing and just a great read. This was a great book (series) and I look forward to the next one as she left us hanging on for more!
This book would get a five star rating ***** from me, because I devoured it!
